The Formulas of Writing
So often I run into people that ask me how they too could get started blogging. They think that they don't know enough or have enough experience to find a worth while niche. Then I often hear that they don't have enough talent or experience as a writer to even get their work published let alone put it on a blog. However, in college, I had this professor, whom I still defer to with any writing questions I may have, that once told me that language and writing formats all have a formula. If you know the equation that a foreign language sentence structure has or if you know the elements required to make the piece you are writing work, then you can speak any language or write in any style.
Short stories are like retelling a moment in time, fantasy or reality. An essay is about backing up your perception. Magazine articles are all about the expose of the subject at hand and come with a word count requirement so that it will fit in the periodical. A blog? A blog post is all about the subject in question. Like the others, they have a focus but they don't branch out.
However, there are a lot of recommendations for lengths and content as well as over all format. There have been elements that have worked for some, better than others. For my own personal formula for this style of writing I have five things I follow.
- Make sure the tone is conversational and not above or below the reader
- Make the intro personalized and relatable to the reader before diving into the subject
- Keep it short and concise. People will think they have the time to read your work before following through
- Keep to the point. If you find another topic crops up, make it another post. Keeps people's interest
- Write for the reader and not the robot. The robot may increase your ranking but it isn't what will keep your readers and potential customers returning
Blog post writing is supposed to be short and interesting. Suggestions of 700 to 3000 words per post are not realistic because people in the 21st century don't want to read as much. So when you write your post, write like you are talking to a person in front of you. Tell them about your passion and what inspires you. Relay little tidbits of information. You never know. You may just help someone else find their niche.
